First day of European Summer … snow!!!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

When we set off from Andorra on June 1st,  we noticed that it was cold but had no idea what was in store for us as we headed to France through the mountains.

We saw some snow on some of the high peaks but had seen this in Portugal and Spain so admired it from afar and took a few more photos from the car to add to the collection.  As we turned each corner, we observed more and more snow, further down the mountains. Quite thrilled, we took a few more photos. Then as we approached the Túnel d´Envalira, which links Andorra and France, it became apparent that not only was there snow at the base of the mountains but that it was on the road in places and was indeed falling from the sky! It was snowing!! Ryker and I were very excited as we had never seen it before.  We were able to safely stop and have a look (and feel) and take more pictures.

Then when we got to the roundabout near the said tunnel, we realised that this ‘amazing’ snow was going to make the roads extremely hazardous (especially for the uninitiated)  so we opted for the tunnel rather than the scenic route, upon which you wouldn’t be able to see anything anyway due to the fact that the mountains were shrouded in mist.  The snow and mist was still there waiting for us as we left the tunnel, so we proceeded cautiously and hoped we had the traction control on properly. (The guy at Eurodrive was going to show us this function but said, “You won’t need it”.)

We drove through the wintry weather for another 30 minutes or so until green mountains revealed themselves again and we felt more at ease (although we had enjoyed the experience). I personally was pleased to tick snow off my list of things to see –  favouring the warm weather and therefore always visiting Europe in the Summer (well, so-called Summer!!), I have always missed the snow and we had therefore been talking about having a white Christmas in Europe sometime.  Frankly, now we can ditch that idea and continue to follow the sun. YAY!

I read a newspaper article the next day that reported that the ski slopes had been re-opened that weekend (they close on 1st April each year) – something that hadn’t happened in June for 30 years! I’m glad I brought that jacket.
