What a gob-smackingly beautiful place Annecy is! It sits in a verdant valley around a lake that is encircled by Le Mont Verier, Le Semnoz, La Tournette and the Parmelan mountains.
We stayed at Hotel La Villa Du Lac, which is situated on the eastern side of the lake. Magnificent views wherever you looked, our camera batteries being rapidly drained as we tried to capture every sight and outlook. Great restaurants along the lake, perfect for a tipple or snack at any time of day. Not to mention the nautical-themed playground for Ryker to act out his fantasies as a sea captain (and boss his second mate around – that would be me). Its lovely manor style properties with enviably green gardens and proximity to the lake had me contemplating a relocation (again!)
We headed into the old town one morning after a walk along the lake. With its canals, ornate bridges and tantalizing confectionery shops, it is a little reminiscent of Venice. The famous Palais de l’Isle, which is a castle in the centre of the Thiou canal doesn’t disappoint. Built in 1132, it was originally Lord Annecy’s house and has since had varied uses, including a mint and a jail. Like many grand old houses, it is now a local history museum.
Still, despite the gorgeous medieval architecture and canals, my favourite thing to do was walk around the aquamarine lake near our hotel, gazing up at the fecund mountains and cerulean sky.
