I mentioned the wonderful Greek hospitality in a previous post but feel compelled to bring it up again as it is absolutely incredible and is, I believe, totally responsible for the widening of our girths.
At every cafe, when you order a drink, you get a bowl of crisps or peanuts; with a coffee or tea you get either some cake, biscuits, mini-muffins or once, iced donuts. When you have a meal at a restaurant, they bring you a dessert with the bill, sometimes with a spirit – and this is all complimentary.
Thing is, we usually are SO full after our meals that we don’t have ANY additional space for such delicacies – however you don’t want to offend anyone or anyone’s mother, wife or grandmother (it’s all homemade) so you end up eating it under a bit of duress (even though it is always delicious). And there isn’t a single island in Greece that is large enough to pace to burn off the extra calories.
As a case in point, it is about 9:30 pm and we just got a knock on the door from the owner of the hotel/rooms we are staying in. She gave us some eggs, a bowl of homemade marmalade and an entire marble cake, straight from the oven! Unbelievable! And so lovely. When we first arrived, she brought us the most divine custard pastries with pineapple and jelly topping. It’s just so hard to keep lean in this country. Just as well we are walking a lot – hopefully counts for something.
