Museum Musings and more about Paros

Visited the Archaeological Museum in Paros, which was fascinating. Despite seeing the concrete, well, actually marble, evidence, I find it hard to digest the fact that the lives of people within these very sophisticated cultures were playing out thousands of years ago in the same place as we are now holidaying. Rykersaurus runs around with the same sense of awe, incessantly asking, “How old is that?” “How did they build that?” He also took on the role of Tour Guide at one point, telling me that the porcelain items in question looked more Egyptian – and he was right, they were! Have I mentioned that he is obsessed with Tutankhamen and Egypt?

I made the mistake, however, of saying that one of the marble pots was probably an ancient loo and from then on, he was on a (chamber pot) mission and would shout out whenever he made a new discovery – at the top of his voice.

The other mistake I made was omitting to turn my camera flash off and was duly reminded by one of museum staff and then stalked by her for the rest of the visit! Obviously pegged as an untrustworthy sort. Which, of course, I am not. I am the kind of person who demands that their bag is checked on the way out of a shop, even if the shopkeeper isn’t terribly interested. But back to the holiday…

Spent lots of time at Lividia Beach, which was only about a five minute walk from our hillside hotel. Rykersaurus enjoyed quaffing watermelon juice at the beach side cafe and floating in the shimmering aquamarine water. Jason and I enjoyed all these things as well, plus the added bonus of watching people play bat and ball, a craze on Greek shores (and other European beaches) that we simply cannot understand. We just can’t see the fun in jumping up and down, semi-clad, within eye shot of loads of holidaymakers, just to hit a ball. Unenlightened? Possibly. Pushing forty and envious? Probably.
