Masks have always been an important part of the Venetian Carnival and can be seen in many shops as you follow the narrow alleyways that snake around the city. Apparently, maskmakers (mascherari) used to enjoy a special position in society, with their own laws and their own guild. Sadly, this is changing now with many cheaper, mass produced masks being imported from China, resulting in the historical craft of maskmaking being lost.
