What an interesting and unexpected sight to see in a city garden – surfers! We were awed by the prowess of the surfers riding this interminable wave on the Eisbach (a small, man made river). Also impressive was the orderly manner in which the surfers queued up and patiently waited for their turn. Apparently, this practice goes on all year round, even when the snow falls! Later, we were to discover that the Germans also swim in this fast flowing river, which therefore not only serves as a beach but as the local swimming pool.

There are also surf contests there, and on the Eisbach’s sister wave, the Flossande. Munich has a standing wave pool, the citywave, at the Jochen Schweizer arena and competitors from across he globe compete in The Rapid Surf League.
